However, sometimes they taste pretty good, so let's compare.
I am an organic advocate, I'll admit it. If it says "organic" I think it's better.
Is it?
Let's take the package of hot dogs I bought today.
In my opinion the price difference wasn't major ( I think they cost $0.50 more than Hebrew National)
So we aren't going to take the price into consideration.
Ingredients:
Organic Grass-fed Beef, Water, Contains Less Than 2% Of The Following: Sea Salt, Organic Spices, Organic Dehydrated Garlic And Onion, Organic Paprika, Celery Powder.
Here is Hebrew National’s ingredient list:
Beef, Water, Contains 2% or Less of: Salt, Sodium Lactate, Spice, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein,Paprika, Sodium Diacetate, Garlic Powder, Sodium Erythorbate, Sodium Nitrite, Flavorings.
And Oscar Mayer Beef Frans ingredient list:
Beef, Water, Contains Less than 2% of Salt, Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Sodium Lactate, Sodium Phosphates, Sodium Diacetate, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Extractives of Paprika,Dried Garlic, Spice, Sodium Nitrite.
If we have learned anything about me thus far it's that I like ingredients I can actually read and understand.
BUT.....Are they any better for you?
Nitrates and nitrates are in ALL hot dogs-even all natural and organic
The organic and all natural companies usually use celery powder (see above) or celery juice in their processed meats, which are high in nitrate. It is then converted to nitrates or nitrites through a bacterial culture. Once converted it becomes almost identical to synthetic nitrite.
My final word: If you are buying hot dogs, please don't do it often, but on this one I still vote for the organic version for the natural ingredients and treatment of the animals.
For health reasons: They are basically identical, eat what you want!!
